Zebras for me have to be one of the most majestic creatures on earth. They have somehow remained almost untouched and undomesticated. For years the question in my head has been why can't we ride the zebra. People don't have zebras on their ranch, and they don't race them in the Kentucky Durby. The zebra is obviously closely related to the horse, which has been domesticated for hundreds of years. Like the horse, zebras run in herds, eat grass, and are in general around the same size. What has made the zebra so different from the domesticated horse? Other than the photographs and calendars that can we can purchase, we can only find a zebra in a zoo. The have gone on the endangered species list, but they can still be found running wild in parts of Africa.
There are a few acceptations of people breeding zebras with horses, so the result is a hybrid creature than can possibly be tamed. Never have zebras ever really been able to be considered domesticated. I dream that maybe one day I can own a zebra and throw my saddle on his back and ride off into the winds, but those chances are next to none. I don't believe that this animal can be domesticated the same way their cousin, the horse, as been.
The distinct pattern that is only found on the zebra is much coveted by the world. The famous stripes are unique to every individual animal. The same way our finger prints make us different from every other human being, one zebra is like no other zebra. We make imitation patterns, stuffed animals, and keep pictures, but nothing comes close to the natural, God created beauty that is the zebra. Wild and free it will remain.
